Swakane Fire *UPDATE* 11,990 acres, 30% Contained

July 12, 2010

The Swakane Canyon

fire continues to burn north of Wenatchee along Highway 97a. As of 6:20pm Monday officials estimate the blaze has

consumed 11,990 acres of steep grassland and brush. The fire is currently 30% contained. 404 firefighters are on

scene, and fire suppression costs to date are just under $1 million.

Grassel said high winds were the story of the day. Gusts topping 45mph made aerial attack on the wildfire

impossible. Grassel said the fire was held pretty much where they expected it, despite the lack of aerial

suppression.
Crews will continue to work to contain the fire tomorrow, when the weather

is expected to be warmer, but winds should be significantly calmer. Level one evacuation notices remain in place

for homes along highway 97a near the Swakane Fire. Join us on KOHO 101.1 FM starting at 6:20 am for the latest
