June 08, 2011

Its now official: the Washington State Special Olympics Winter Games is returning to Wenatchee. The

organizations’s executive board took formal action on a proposed long-term agreement over the weekend. That came

as welcome news to Eric Granstrom with the Wenatchee Valley Sports Council who has been spearheading drive to

retain the games . .

The Memorandum of Understanding outlines a five-year partnership between both Special

Olympics and a consortium of business, hotel, government, non-profit and individual supporters of the Games. It

provides for the Games to be held in the Wenatchee Valley while the local community will cover the approximately

$30,000 in facility costs. ..Granstrom says the community should receive a gold medal for its support . .

Included in the agreement is a commitment by the local facilities to maintain 2011 pricing/donation levels; and

contracted Games hotels will maintain 2011 pricing levels through 2013 and go up no more than 5% for 2014-16.
