August 09, 2010

A hiker died Friday night

after falling 15 feet from a waterfall in the Chelan County high country. Sgt Chris Foreman with the Chelan

County Sheriff's Department says the accident happened in Asgaard Pass off the Colchuck Lake Trail. The victim,

identified as 52 year old Stephen Grate of Renton, was hiking with two companions when he fell. Sgt. Foreman

says another group of hikers came upon the first group and radioed the US Forest Service for help. The victim

had reportedly suffered a concussion and his health was deteorating. Foreman says the victim's friends began

CPR on the victim at about 9:30. A Military helicopter from Whidbey Island was dispatched but the flight was

aborted shortly before midnight. That's when information was radioed in from the scene that the victim had died

and that CPR had been halted. A helicopter from Snohomish County flew in the area Saturday and recovered the

body.
