Highway 97A Fence Saving Deer, Cars, Lives

September 23, 2011

For folks making a regular

commute from Wenatchee to Entiat or Chelan, the question wasn’t if you might hit an animal on Highway 97A,

it was more likely when you would. An 8 mile long fence between Wenatchee and Entiat have gone a long ways

towards lessening the danger on a highway that sported one of the highest animal kill rates in the state. State

officials say the mortality rate of sheep and deer along that stretch of highway is down as much as 80

percent. KOHO’s Clint Strand talked with Department of Fish and Wildlife Biologist Dave Volsen about

the fence and safety along Highway 97A.
