(Reuters) - Thousands of policemen from around the United States gathered on Friday at the funeral of a 25-year-old New York City officer who was shot in the head while on patrol, making him the third member of the NYPD killed in the line of duty since December. Services for the New York Police Department's Brian Moore at a Roman Catholic church in a Long Island suburb were attended by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, Police Commissioner William Bratton and dozens of other dignitaries. Moore, who was promoted posthumuously to the rank of detective, is the latest reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in American cities.

By Kim Palmer CLEVELAND (Reuters) - A Cleveland man has confessed to killing five people including a woman and her unborn child at in November in exchange for prosecutors not seeking the death penalty, authorities said on Friday. James Sparks-Henderson, 19, was charged with five counts of aggravated murder and bond was set at $7.5 million during a court appearance on Friday, Cleveland Municipal court spokesman Ed Ferenc said. Sparks-Henderson has given no motive or expressed remorse for the killings, though he has told authorities that he described one of the victims as one of his best friends, Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty said.

A man, protesting the death of Freddie Gray, is detained by police after defying a curfew in Baltimore, MarylandBy Julia Edwards WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department on Friday launched an investigation into the Baltimore police department's use of force and whether there are patterns of discriminatory policing. The probe, announced by U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, was requested by Baltimore's mayor in the aftermath of the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who sustained fatal injuries while in police custody, and the outrage it sparked in Maryland's largest city. The Justice Department has conducted similar reviews of U.S. police departments. An investigation of police in Ferguson, Missouri, where a white officer shot dead an unarmed black teenager last year, concluded in March that the department routinely engaged in racially biased practices.
