While one wildfire is nearing containment a second continues to blacken hillsides along hwy 97-A North of Wenatchee. Most recently The Swakane Canyon fire erupted this afternoon about 1:30. US Forest Service and State DNR crews are working to contain the blaze which has generated a huge column of smoke visible throughout the WEnatchee Valley. The State Patrol reported at 3:20 pm that Highway 97-A was open in both directions but that could change so check with for links to the Washington State DOT or the Washington State patrol for updated travel conditions.

Officials say the Mission Creek fire, reported shortly after midnight this morning, is still being tended to. Its forward progress has been halted and and interior heavy fuels are still burning and being contained by hand crews. The fire, still under investigation, has burned between 40 and 50 acres. a Type 3 Incident Management Team was brought in to manage the fire and U.S. Forest Service crews along with Department of Natural Resources ground teams were brought in to dig lines around the fire. As of this writing the fire is surrounded by 40% of hand line on the fire. About 145 firefighters are still on scene. Theres a forcast for higher winds this evening.
