Wenatchee Council Moves Forward with Plan to Merge Arena and Convention Center Food Services

August 06, 2010

Wenatchee City Council has given the green light, check that, the yellow light, to cautiously move forward with plans to consolidate Town Toyota Center and Convention Center food and beverage services.

The Council was split 4-3 on a motion to authorize staff to negotiate a contract with Savor, a Seattle-based company, to provide the services. . . Steve Hair attended the meeting and he files this report.

The vote came after extensive discussion about the proposed changes which, if approved, could bring to an end the City’s longtime partnership with the Coast Wenatchee Hotel which for the past 30 years has managed the food services.

There was considerable debate among the Council members about the actual financial benefits that could be realized with the change. Councilman Tony Veeder moved to go forward with the contract negotiations but that doesn’t mean he’s fully supportive of the switch.

Prior to taking the vote the Council was urged not to go forward with the change by union-backed employees of the Convention Center.

Three companies submitted proposals for the food service contract with Savor coming out on top. The Council now awaits the results of the contract negotiations which are being handled by a committee comprised of Council and Public Facilities District board members. Also still to be decided are plans to turn over the marketing and management of both the Convention Center and Arena to the Wenatchee Visitors and Convention Center.
