South by Southwest is an annual music industry event that brings thousands of bands and hordes of record label representatives, producers, promoters, and fans to Austin, Texas for almost 2 weeks of performances and events at more than 100 venues. It is the biggest music festival of its kind in the world, THE place for rising bands to be discovered.
This year, as in years past, many Seattle bands made the trip to SXSW, touring all along the way. One band, perpetual KOHO favorite and rising stars of garage-soul Pickwick, returned to Austin for their second year in a row. But this year, with the full length album Can’t Talk Medicine just released, the stakes are higher.
Isaac Kaplan-Woolner got a tour update from Pickwick lead singer Galen Disston after sound check for their show at the Convention Center on Friday. Disston was tired from all the shows he had played at SXSW, but elated at the new exposure his band is receiving.
