What is the first thing you notice when driving into Leavenworth? Is it the mountains? The Bavarian themed architecture? Or is it the hulking grey monstrosity on highway 2, the long abandoned warehouse that was once the Leavenworth Fruit Company?
Plans to remove or renovate that big building date back decades, yet all those plans have fallen through. Until now.
The City of Leavenworth has bought the warehouse property, and they are tearing it down to make way for much needed new parking spaces. Well, actually, Pipkin Construction is doing the demolition, and this week it began in earnest.
With the old fruit warehouse finally coming down, Isaac Kaplan-Woolner met with Leavenworth’s City Administrator Joel Walinski to watch heavy machinery begin to tear through concrete and steel. Walinski said final plans for parking are still being discussed, but the warehouse should be down and cleared out within a few weeks.:
