Leavenworth Chamber Weathers Downturn

February 15, 2010

Winter has been crowded in little Bavarian Leavenworth,

despite a warm winter and the down economy.
But lodging tax dollars are down for the first time after a

decade of steady growth. Leavenworth Chamber of commerce Executive Director Nancy Smith says the 4% drop last year

is much better than the rest of the site.

Smith said Seattle lodging receipts dropped 19%, while Bellvue was

almost 30% down. She said the sustained popularity of Leavenworth’s many festivals has helped it weather the

financial storm.

Smith said an upcoming Chamber Board retreat will discuss the possibility of adding two

additional festivals during slower times in Leavenworth’s calendar.
She added that while a 4% drop in

lodging tax dollars and a 10% drop in sales tax receipts last year is nothing to celebrate, Leavenworth will

soldier on towards economic recovery.
