Cle Elum Inferno Torches 60 Homes, Highway 97 Remains Open

"font-size: 14pt">So much for a sleepy fire season in the Evergreen State.

A fire that started near

Cle Elum yesterday blew up overnight, detonating from a 2,600 acre burn to a 26,000 acre inferno. Department

of Natural Resources officials say the Taylor Bridge fire has already torched 60 homes, and many more stand in its

path. Fire officials say they’re expecting an active front today, with no containment and high winds

through the evening.

Washington Department of Transportation officials say that Blewett Pass remains

open, and do not foresee any immanent closures. However, the stretch of highway connecting highway 97 to

Ellensburg IS closed, due to proximity to the fire. If you need to head south on Highway 97, officials say

you should continue on 97 towards Cle Elum from Blewett Pass, then backtrack towards Ellensburg on I-90. Once

there, you can continue south.
