After several months of lengthy deliberation and a nation-wide candidate search, the Chelan County PUD Commissioners have chosen a new General Manager. The commissioners announced their unanimous selection of Steve Wright to replace retiring GM John Janney at a special meeting yesterday afternoon.
Wright is the former administrator and CEO of Bonneville Power Administration, a federal nonprofit agency based in the Pacific Northwest that markets wholesale electrical power from 31 federal hydro projects in the Columbia River Basin. Wright spent 32 years at BPA.
Through his experience there, Chelan PUD commissioners said they felt he was the best fit for the position out of their several potential candidates. Commissioner and board president Carnan Bergren said he feels the board was presented a diamond in the rough when Wright expressed an interest in the position.
Wright will step into the position officially on Sept. 3. Current GM John Janney plans to stay on through mid September to oversee the transition. Janney announced his retirement five months ago and had intended to leave Chelan PUD in early August. Commissioners voted Monday to add 20 days to Janney’s employment agreement to reimburse him for scheduled leave in consideration for his agreeing to stay longer.
