Over ten thousand internet users are now hooked up to
Chelan County PUD’s wholesale fiber-optic network. But concerns continue over the system’s financial health. Steve
Hair reports that PUD Commissioners received an update on the system at their Monday meeting. The wholesale
network offers access to high-speed Internet, telephone and HD-TV services in about 80 percent of the county from
private firms. Networks Operations group business adviser Dave Nelson says current budget constraints has slowed
the build-out process.
On the financial side of the ledger the fiber network has been operating at a loss when
you factor in the total amount of money invested in the project. The PUD has spent over $105 million dollars
overall in the system, which had a net loss of $7 million last year.
