Chelan County Finds 1.5 Million Dollar Budget Hole for 2010

October 07, 2009

Chelan County commissioners are starting to look at next year’s budget…and the view, once again, isn’t pretty.

Commissioners knew they were looking at a major budget shortfall for 2010, likely on the order of a million dollars. What they found was a likely budget deficit much larger…likely closer to 1.5 million dollars.

In an interview with KOHO’s Clint Strand, Commissioner Keith Goehner says while they were conservative in their revenue forecasts, tax returns were even more dismal than projected.

When it comes to cuts, county staff has been there, done that…many offices had to slash budgets during last year’s money crunch. For most of those offices, the cuts came through axing unfilled positions and improving departmental efficiencies…this year, Goehner said the cuts may hurt more.

County officials will continue their budget hearings with individual departments through the rest of the month, and then will start to evaluate in November where…and how much…each department will have to cut.
