Proposed changes to the

way students obtain financial aid for college has ignited a debate in congress. The Student Aid and Fiscal

Responsibility Act is currently in the Senate after passing a House vote last week. The proposal ends federal

subsidies for private lenders, leaving the government to make all student loans. Critics such as Congressman Doc

Hastings calls the bill a federal government takeover that offers no improvments in the existing system. But

supporters, such as Wenatchee Valley College Financial Aid Director Kevin Berg are in favor of the change.
