U.S. court overturns law limiting biotech crops on Hawaiian island

Yahoo! National News - Tue, 08/26/2014 - 05:44
A group of global biotech crop companies won a court victory on Monday that blocks enactment of a law passed last year limiting the planting of biotech crops and use of pesticides on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. District Court in Hawaii ruled that the law passed in November by local leaders on the island was invalid because it was pre-empted by Hawaii state law. The Kauai law required large agricultural companies to disclose pesticide use and genetically modified (GMO) crop plantings while establishing buffer zones around schools, homes and hospitals to protect people from exposure to pesticides used on the crops.

N.J. teacher, 98, in court to fight 1950 conviction in spy case

Yahoo! National News - Tue, 08/26/2014 - 05:42
By Joseph Ax NEW YORK (Reuters) - More than six decades ago, Miriam Moskowitz stood in New York federal court and was convicted of lying to a grand jury investigating a Cold War atomic espionage case. On Monday, the 98-year-old Moskowitz returned to court for the first time since then, this time to ask a federal judge to erase her conviction and remedy what she says was a McCarthy-era injustice. "It would be a historical acknowledgement that the period itself was so bad for the country," she said following the brief appearance in New York before U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who set a November hearing date to consider the request.

Arkansas police chief resigns after calling reporter 'smelly'

Yahoo! National News - Tue, 08/26/2014 - 05:39
By Steve Barnes LITTLE ROCK Ark. (Reuters) - The chief of the Jonesboro, Arkansas police resigned on Monday, three days after being suspended by the mayor for making derogatory comments on Facebook about a local news reporter he called "smelly" and a backer of marijuana smoking. Mike Yates, chief of police in Jonesboro, about 135 miles (220 kms) northeast of Little Rock, said he was stepping down to take responsibility for his mistakes. The reporter, Sunshine Crump, who resigned from the Jonesboro Sun last week after complaining she no longer felt safe, will rejoin the newspaper, its editor said. "You're never happy about someone losing their job but I really couldn't see him returning in his role as police chief," Mosesso said of Yates.
