By Keith Coffman BOULDER Colo. (Reuters) - A county clerk in Colorado refused on Tuesday an ultimatum by the state attorney general to stop unilaterally issuing same-sex marriage licenses until the U.S. Supreme Court settles the issue, or face legal action. The conflict in Colorado erupted after the elected clerk of left-leaning Boulder County began issuing marriage licenses to gay couples last week despite warnings from the Republican attorney general that such licenses would be invalid. “Same-sex licenses are legal and just and we will continue to issue them,” Boulder County Clerk Hillary Hall said in a statement rejecting the latest demand of the state attorney general. Colorado Attorney General John Suthers says the nuptials are invalid because of the hold put on the Utah case by the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, whose rulings apply to six states including Colorado.

Yahoo! National News - Wed, 07/02/2014 - 05:02

People sign up for health insurance at an enrollment event in CudahyBy David Lawder WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Online insurance marketplaces created under President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law are struggling to verify whether Americans who applied for government subsidies to purchase health insurance are actually qualified to receive them, a federal watchdog agency said on Tuesday. The Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General said in two reports that some "internal controls" were ineffective in verifying eligibility at the marketplaces run by the federal government, California, Connecticut and some other states. The maximum household income allowed for a subsidy is four times the federal poverty level, or about $94,200 for a family of four.
