Florida judge in Casey Anthony trial returns to private practice

Yahoo! National News - Wed, 09/03/2014 - 03:50
By Barbara Liston ORLANDO Fla (Reuters) - The Florida judge who presided over the Casey Anthony murder trial in 2011 started a new job as a personal injury lawyer on Tuesday, two days after he retired from the bench. Belvin Perry Jr. was praised widely for his calm and even-handed management of the Orlando trial televised worldwide in which Anthony was acquitted of killing her 2year-old daughter, Caylee, whose body was found duct-taped and dumped in woods near their home. Perry created a set of procedures to handle crowds of media, spectators, tourists and protesters that has been replicated for high-profile cases, including in the 2013 Florida trial of George Zimmerman, who was acquitted of murder in the killing of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin. At his news conference, Perry said he had wanted to be a personal injury lawyer when he graduated from law school but that fate led him first to become a prosecutor and then a judge.

South Carolina boy sues over makeup removal for driver's license photo

Yahoo! National News - Wed, 09/03/2014 - 03:43
By Harriet McLeod CHARLESTON S.C. (Reuters) - The mother of a South Carolina teenager who says he was ordered to remove his makeup for his driver's license photograph filed suit on Tuesday against the state's Department of Motor Vehicles on civil rights grounds.    The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Chase Culpepper, 16, who regularly wears makeup and women's clothing, pits transgender rights against the state's ability to determine when a person's appearance has been altered to the point of misrepresentation in an official photo ID. The suit, which alleges discrimination based on sex stereotypes, was filed in federal court in South Carolina by the New York-based Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund.     "I love my son just the way he is," Teresa Culpepper, who is suing on behalf of her son, said in a statement.

Six Cubans land in Texas after drifting across Gulf of Mexico

Yahoo! National News - Wed, 09/03/2014 - 03:42
By Amanda Orr HOUSTON (Reuters) - Six men who identified themselves as Cubans have landed on a Texas coastal island after the engine failed on their boat, causing it to drift for more than two weeks across the Gulf of Mexico before reaching shore, authorities said on Tuesday. The men told authorities they were trying to land in Cancun, Mexico about 260 miles (420 km) away and to the west from their launch point in Nueva Gerona, Cuba, but landed on South Padre Island in south Texas, about 950 miles away (1,500 km). "They were elated when they found out they were in the U.S.," said Horacio Zamora, head of the Cameron County, Texas parks department. The men told authorities that they had been adrift since Aug. 15, when their boat's engine failed.
