Arkansas Republican resigns after saying Clinton could 'get shot'

Yahoo! National News - Fri, 06/27/2014 - 01:22
By Steve Barnes LITTLE ROCK Ark. (Reuters) - An Arkansas Republican official has resigned after telling a magazine former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would "probably get shot" if she returned to the state where she was a lawyer and served as first lady, officials said on Thursday. Clinton, seen as the front runner for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, is set to return to Arkansas on Friday to sign copies of her new memoir. Johnny Rhoda, who was chairman of the Republican Party in the Second Congressional District in Arkansas, was quoted in U.S. News this week as saying Clinton could not expect much political support in the state if she ran for president. Doyle Webb, chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party, described Rhoda's comments as "an unnecessary distraction from the important issues before the state." On Thursday, Webb announced Rhoda's resignation in a statement to local TV broadcaster KARK.

Men who say they tossed a winning lottery ticket sue New Jersey

Yahoo! National News - Fri, 06/27/2014 - 01:05
Two men who say they mistakenly threw away a $1 million winning lottery ticket are suing the state of New Jersey to try to retrieve the funds, their attorney said on Thursday. The two men, Salvatore Cambria and Erick Onyango, claim in a lawsuit filed on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in New Jersey that the state lottery failed to post winning numbers on its website in a timely manner, causing them to falsely think they had lost and to toss the ticket in the trash, attorney Edward Logan said. The men's ticket, purchased at a 7-Eleven in Mahwah, New Jersey, had every number right except the Powerball digit, Logan said, and was worth a $1 million consolation prize. Cambria and Onyango filed a claim over the missing ticket with the New Jersey Lottery Commission, and after waiting several months with no word back, they decided to sue, Logan said.

Massachusetts to raise minimum wage to highest of any U.S. state

Yahoo! National News - Fri, 06/27/2014 - 00:47

Demonstrators protest outside a Burger King restaurant in Boston, MassachusettsBy Elizabeth Barber BOSTON (Reuters) - Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick on Thursday signed into law a measure raising the minimum wage to the highest of any U.S. state, $11 per hour, by 2017. The move comes as U.S. Democrats nationally are trying to make the minimum wage a key issue ahead of midterm congressional elections in November, framing the effort as a quest of conscience on behalf of the millions of Americans living on wages that have not kept up with rising costs of living. "Raising the minimum wage brings a little relief to the working poor, many of whom do jobs we could not live without and who recycle money right back into the economy," Patrick said in a statement announcing the signing. The law will raise the state's minimum wage in stages from its current level of $8 per hour and follows similar moves by neighboring Connecticut and Vermont.
