Students held rallies on college campuses across the United States on Thursday to protest ballooning student loan debt for higher education and rally for tuition-free public colleges and a minimum wage hike for campus workers. The demonstrations, dubbed the Million Student March, were planned just two days after thousands of fast-food workers took to the streets in a nationwide day of action pushing for a $15-an-hour minimum wage and union rights for the industry. About 50 students from Boston-area colleges gathered at Northeastern University carrying signs that read "Degrees not receipts" and "Is this a school or a corporation?" Officer Nouman Raja, 38, had been on administrative leave from the Palm Beach Gardens police force following the shooting of Corey Jones on Oct. 18. Jones' death sparked outrage after law enforcement officials revealed the officer was in plainclothes and never showed a badge before shooting the 31-year-old. The city announced Raja's dismissal on Thursday.
A salvage team looking for the voyage data recorder for the sunken freighter El Faro said on Thursday it had located the bridge deck that separated from the wreckage, but the ship's black box was still missing. National Transportation Safety Board investigators said the search continues for the recorder, which normally is affixed to the bridge but appeared to have detached when the ship sank in a hurricane last month, killing 33 mostly American crew onboard. The bridge was located about one mile from the main wreckage, said Eric Weiss, an NTSB spokesman.
