For striking U.S. refinery workers, Shell shows a new face

Yahoo! National News - Wed, 02/04/2015 - 03:36
By Erwin Seba HOUSTON (Reuters) - At tense meetings just days before the first major U.S. refinery strike in 35 years was called on Sunday, union leaders grew increasingly pessimistic about getting a new labor contract and a sizable wage increase. Officials from Royal Dutch Shell Plc, the lead negotiator for the oil companies, were repeatedly saying it would be too hard to meet the union's demands for a new three-year contract to lift pay and tighten safety practices, several union officials told Reuters. The USW had always viewed Shell as the most flexible of the big oil companies, much easier to negotiate with than Exxon Mobil Corp or Marathon Petroleum Corp. In fact, the union picks the company to head up negotiations and specifically chose Shell this year for its perceived flexibility. "We were very, very shocked," USW International President Leo Gerard said about Shell's decision to cut off talks on Sunday.

Judge ousts juror in ex-NFL star Hernandez's murder trial

Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez attends his murder trial in Falls RiverBy Daniel Lovering FALL RIVER, Mass. (Reuters) - A Massachusetts judge on Tuesday removed a juror in the high-profile murder trial of former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez, saying the juror misled the court about attendance at Patriots games and expressed an opinion on the case. The juror, who was not identified, was a member of the panel of five men and 13 women hearing testimony in Hernandez's trial on charges relating to the 2013 death of Odin Lloyd, a semiprofessional football player who had been dating Hernandez's fiancée's sister. "There is credible evidence that the juror did talk about the case over the last few years, and that the juror expressed a specific opinion about the case," Associate Justice Susan Garsh said at Massachusetts Superior Court in Fall River. Hernandez, 25, has been accused of fatally shooting Lloyd near his home in North Attleborough, Massachusetts, in June 2013.
